This honey bee found itself on the wrong end of a very determined takeaway order. These pictures by Jon Hawkins show a female bee wolf wasp carrying a honey bee back to her sandy burrow on Puttenham Common in Surrey on July 1.
The native wasp paralyses honey bees before packing them away as food for her young, with several bees sometimes stored in each little chamber.
But despite the rather ruthless routine, bee wolves are not Asian hornets, do not threaten honey bee colonies and are actually useful pollinators, as well as a sign of a healthy ecosystem.
