These dramatic images by Dave Newman show the split second an osprey appeared to dive straight towards the camera with its talons stretched out in front like a feathered fighter jet.
The photos were taken in Rutland earlier this year, with Dave describing the moment as the shot he had “always wanted”. Capturing the bird this close and in sharp focus was far from easy, especially with difficult light and the osprey moving at incredible speed. After following the bird for several minutes, the big moment happened in an instant as the bird swept around from the left before suddenly diving straight at the lens.
Dave said his favourite image from the series is the one showing the osprey head on with its talons out, calling it the perfect combination of timing, speed and pure luck.
