This cattle egret landed a far more ambitious meal than usual when it caught a Russell’s viper near Sketri village, Chandigarh, India.
Photographer Anuj Jain captured the bird lifting off with the highly venomous snake dangling from its beak on July 8. Cattle egrets commonly follow grazing livestock and snap up insects disturbed in the grass, but this one clearly had its sights set on something rather bigger.
After securing its catch, the egret spread its wings and flew away with its supersized takeaway.
